Have you ever wondered how to make sweet potato hash browns? Well, wonder no more…you’ve come to the right place to learn! This recipe is quite easy and is a crowd-pleaser. It is low fat and Trim Healthy Mama-friendly.
Where Did Hash Browns Originate?
If you guessed New York City, then you are correct!
Hash browns are a popular breakfast dish that came to be somewhere around the 1890’s.
What Are Hash Browns?
Many people know what hash browns are, but just in case you have never heard of such a food, let me tell you!
“Hash” is derived from the French word “hacher” which means to hack or chop. So hash browns would technically mean chopped and fried potatoes.
Hash browns are simply chopped or shredded potatoes, fried until golden brown.
Why Use Sweet Potatoes And Not White Potatoes?
There are a couple reasons you may want to use sweet potatoes to make your hash browns.
First of all, if you’ve never had sweet potato hash browns with your eggs or sausage, it is now time to try it!
The flavors can’t be beat! It has a different flavor than regular white potatoes and I personally love them.
Secondly, sweet potatoes are not as prone to mess with your blood sugar like white potatoes do. White potatoes are on plan for the Trim Healthy Mama, but are recommended for those who are at goal weight.
How Do I Make Sweet Potato Hash Browns?
You will find that the process of making sweet potato hash browns is quite simple and even fun!
If you have a box grater in your cupboard, it will come in handy at this point.
If you choose to make enough hash browns for 1-2 people, a hand grater is perfect (and it gives you a little workout too).
If you plan to use more than a couple sweet potatoes, you may want to use a food processor with the shredder blade. It’s like magic and gets the job done super fast!
Once your sweet potatoes are shredded, place them in a heated nonstick skillet. You may add a touch of butter or oil, but I find that nonstick skillets work great without oil.
Stir your potatoes fairly often so they don’t get too dark on the bottom.
Fry them until they are tender and browned to your liking.
What Can I Eat With Sweet Potato Hash Browns?
They are known as a breakfast food, but hash browns can be eaten in your supper meals as well.
If eating them at breakfast, you can have eggs or egg whites with them, along with a side of sausage! Perfect!!
There are a variety of casseroles that use hash browns, but a favorite breakfast casserole in my home is this Sweet Potato Breakfast Casserole.
It contains your eggs, sausage, cheese and hash browns all in one delicious dish!! It’s a must-try.
Where Do Sweet Potatoes Fit On The Trim Healthy Mama Plan?
Because they are higher in carbs, a sweet potato is considered an E for the Trim Healthy Mama.
If you need to have an E breakfast, try some fried egg whites and turkey sausage with your hash browns.
Having whole fried eggs would be a fabulous Crossover.
